I was born at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster Feb.1, 1934 the oldest child of John Henry Jones and Phylis Briggs. John Henrys father William Chilton Jones left Wales in 1870 landing at New York and working his way across the country and as a Texas Ranger and finally as a Railway Bridgeman in California. The call came for a Bridgeman in B.C. which he took and then he farmed where the airport is today at Sea Island before taking up land in South Surrey. He married Frances Porter from County Cavan Ireland who was here visiting her sister Sarah Porter Daniels who had come to BC. in 1876. My Maternal Grandfather William Eustace Briggs came from the Medway in Kent where they were all employed as mariners. He immigrated to Mawer Saskatchewan in 1905 and took up a homestead, after losing 2 wives in childbirth he sold his holding and came to BC. where took up farming again until moving to Vancouver working for the Railway to raise his family. My Maternal Grandmother Alice Frances Tilling came from Hawkesbury Gloucestershire where they were involved in farming and the wool trade .After her mothers death( Emma Thompson) the younger children were placed in care where the girls were trained as servants. She came to Canada in in 1910 on a Servant ship from there she worked for Henry Duclos, Mayor of Westmount, Montreal. How she met my Grandfather I do not know. There are many postcards and letters but they don't answer any questions. So many unanswered questions , that is what keeps us interested and makes family history so challenging.
